About the museum
The Ferenczy Múzeum began as a municipal local history collection and bears the name of the painter Ferenczy Károly. In 1951 it found a home in the former Serbian Orthodox school building. When the county museum administration was set up and the museum centre of Pest County moved from Budapest to Szentendre, the building was extended with a new wing.
The permanent exhibition of the Ferenczy family’s artistic legacy, which occupies both the old and the new wings, opened in 1973, and the museum was then renamed Ferenczy Múzeum.
In 2000 the Serbian Orthodox Church reclaimed the building under church restitution, and it was handed back in 2010. The reconstruction and extension of the listed 18th-century Pajor manor house on Kossuth Lajos utca then began, and the new Ferenczy Múzeum opened there on 18 June 2013. The museum is the central exhibition venue of the Ferenczy Múzeumi Centrum; the centre holds art, archaeological, literary, historical and ethnographic collections.
