About the museum
The Kmetty Museum opened in 1981 on the main square of Szentendre, in an 18th-century building. The painter Kmetty János (1889–1975) worked in Szentendre every summer. After his death his widow donated a legacy of 275 items to the Ferenczy Múzeum, and the collection was formed from it.
Regarded as one of the representatives of Hungarian Cubism, the artist's oeuvre can be followed from early open-air painting through the Cubist period and the influence of Activism, to the bluish-toned compositions of the 1960s. The museum building was modernised in 2018 and has been open to visitors again since then.
In the courtyard stands Kerényi Jenő's statue of Csontváry, made in 1960. The house currently hosts a long-term exhibition presenting the art of Barcsay Jenő and the transformation of landscape and the human body in his works.
