About the museum
The history of the museum is intertwined with the history of the Serbian church in Hungary. The basis of the collection is the episcopal treasury of Szentendre, which grew over time with ever new treasures and gradually became the most significant Orthodox collection in the country. The material of the diocesan library and archive is closely connected with it. In the building, which had already been operating as a museum at the end of the 1960s, the material remains of Serbian Orthodox ecclesiastical art in Hungary are on display.
Most of the works of art date from the 18th century. The icon material is significant; partly it follows the post-Byzantine school, but many of the icons are more innovative works by self-taught painters. Among the more learned artists are Ostoja Mrkojević, Mitrofán Zográf and Nedelko Podović. The decorative-art pieces already bear Baroque features: they were often commissioned from Hungarian, Austrian and other European masters, but local Serbian goldsmiths also made outstanding works.
The collection presents only part of the art treasures of the diocese; the other relics are still found in some forty Serbian churches in Hungary. In Szentendre one can see reliquaries, icons, ecclesiastical vestments, codex Bibles, pastoral staffs and furniture, as well as a portrait of III. Arsenije Čarnojević, Serbian patriarch, in pontifical vestments.
