About the museum
Béla Czóbel was one of the most defining and internationally recognised personalities of modern Hungarian painting, and the first painter to whom a museum was dedicated in Hungary during his lifetime. The Czóbel Múzeum opened in 1975 on Templom tér in Szentendre. In the more than forty years since, many people, among them the artist’s daughter, Lisa Czóbel, have contributed to the growth of the collection.
The permanent exhibition remained almost unchanged for decades. After the renovation and re-arrangement of 2016, however, the new concept does not emphasise unchangeability: the core material selected from the museum’s holdings is renewed year by year, and Czóbel’s graphic works received greater emphasis, being given a separate permanent room.
The permanent exhibition also includes, for shorter or longer periods, works borrowed from private and public collections, so that a more nuanced and complete picture of the oeuvre can be given. The renewal of the museum was supported in 2020 by the Magyar Művészeti Akadémia (Hungarian Academy of Arts).
