Kovács Margit Kerámiamúzeum

One of the most popular museums in Szentendre, presenting the life’s work of the Kossuth Prize-winning ceramic artist Kovács Margit, with tactile replicas.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 3,200

About the museum

The collection presenting the life’s work of the Kossuth Prize-winning ceramic artist Kovács Margit opened in Szentendre in 1973. The material on display was donated to the museum by the artist, who is regarded as one of the renewers of Hungarian ceramic art, in 1972. Her oeuvre is extremely versatile, technically masterful and very varied in its subject matter.

The renewed permanent exhibition presents her life’s path from a new perspective: the timeline is broken up, some periods receive greater emphasis, well-known pieces are given prime position, long-unseen works are brought out, and archive recordings and videos evoke the era in which the ceramics were made. Documents, letters and photographs from her previously unprocessed estate also appear.

The updated exhibition, in addition to the material from Szentendre, also presents a collection of outdoor and public works scattered across the country. A special feature is that authentic replicas of the artist’s best-known ceramics, which can also be touched by hand, make the oeuvre accessible to the blind and partially sighted.
