About the museum
André Kertész (1894–1985) is one of the most acclaimed creators of 20th-century photography. He spent his childhood summers in Szigetbecse with his uncle; in a later interview he said that the landscape and the people of Becse were reborn in each of his photographs. The memorial museum opened in 1987. Kertész donated and sent 120 signed photographs to the institution; this is the only selection from his oeuvre that he compiled himself for the Hungarian public.
The house also displays some furniture and personal objects from the artist’s New York apartment. The exhibition is built around the Szigetbecse location: it shows a picture of the Danube backwater taken in spring 1913, as well as Kertész’s last photograph of the same backwater in Szigetbecse, which he took on 31 July 1984. The museum was renovated in 1994, on the centenary of Kertész’s birth; in the small park the statue by Zsin Judit was unveiled in September 2022.
