JPM Mecseki Bányászati Múzeum

An exhibition on the history of coal and uranium mining in Pécs, with tools, instruments, maps and minerals of the Mecsek, on Káptalan utca.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,000

About the museum

Coal mining in the Mecsek mountains began in the 18th century, and from 1850 the Első Dunagőzhajózási Társaság (First Danube Steamship Company) mined coking coal in the area for about a hundred years. The mining collection opened in Pécs in 1974, under the name Pécsi Bányászati Gyűjtemény (Pécs Mining Collection).

The museum at Káptalan utca 3 shares a courtyard with the JPM Vasarely Múzeum. Visitors can travel back in time, through tools, instruments, historical maps, documents and the characteristic minerals, rocks and fossils of the Mecsek, into the world of coal and uranium mining, which is also significant for the history of the town.

The exhibition is part of the Mecseki Bányászati Kiállítások (Mecsek Mining Exhibitions). The underground gallery (vágat) has been permanently closed for technical reasons.
