About the museum

The Jósa András Múzeum in Nyíregyháza looks back on more than a century and a half of history, which makes it one of the oldest regional museums in the country. It was founded by the physician and archaeologist Jósa András; after his death the county named the institution he had established after him.

The museum’s mission is to collect, preserve and present the past and cultural heritage of Nyíregyháza, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County and the wider region. Its collection includes archaeological, ethnographic, local history, historical document, fine art, applied art, literary history, numismatic and natural science material.

The main building on Benczúr tér is currently closed to visitors for renovation. The Sóstói Múzeumfalu (Sóstó Museum Village) and the Kállay Gyűjtemény (Kállay Collection), both belonging to the institution, are separate branches that can be visited.
