About the museum
The idea of the Sóstói Múzeumfalu came in 1964 from Csallány Dezső, county museum director. The town council of Nyíregyháza decided in favour of creating an open-air museum, and in 1967 the county council ordered the establishment of an open-air ethnographic museum at Sóstó. The plans were prepared in 1969 by Mendele Ferenc and Erdélyi Zoltán; the Ministry of Culture approved them in 1970, and construction began on one and a half hectares in the same year. Because of the flood of 1970, the layout had to be modified.
The buildings relocated from Szatmár, Rétköz and other regions were restored on site. By the end of the first construction phase, in 1978, thirty-five buildings stood on five farmsteads: three from Szatmár and two from Rétköz. By 1979 the area had expanded to seven hectares, and the museum opened on 28 September 1979 as the fourth open-air ethnographic museum in the country.
Later the museum village was extended with the school relocated from Barabás in 1987, the village centre and the reconstruction of an Árpád-era settlement section. Visitors can get to know the peasant architecture of Szatmár, Rétköz, Nyírség and Tiszahát, traditional ways of life and various crafts. The museum has received several awards, including Museum of the Year in 1996, Family-friendly Museum in 2006 and Community Museum in 2020.
