About the museum
Martyn Ferenc (1899–1986), sculptor, painter and graphic artist, was a defining figure of modern Hungarian art and a master who founded a school of artistic life in the southern Transdanubia region. Before the war he spent many years in Paris, where he became acquainted with modern avant-garde aspirations; after the war he became one of the most important Hungarian representatives of non-figurative trends.
In 1974 a memorial museum opened in Pécs with works that Martyn had given to the city and to the Janus Pannonius Múzeum. The permanent exhibition presenting Martyn Ferenc's art can be seen today at Káptalan utca 4, and offers the most comprehensive cross-section of his painting and sculptural oeuvre to date.
The exhibition also presents the works of Martyn's outstanding pupil Lantos Ferenc (1929–2014). Lantos was a Kossuth Prize-winning painter and honorary citizen of Pécs, a significant creator of open painting and concrete painting, who developed his own visual language and a creative visual education programme.
