About the museum
The harbour fortress uncovered within the boundaries of Dunakeszi was one of the fortifications of the Roman Empire’s Danube frontier defence system (limes), pushed forward into barbarian territory. The ruins were discovered during house construction by Hirschberg Attila, the owner of plot 28 on Duna sor; the fortress wall was then excavated and made presentable.
In front of Duna sor 28–31, a collapsed block of wall can be seen in the street. In the garden and cellar of house no. 28 the fortress’s high-standing walls and one tower can be viewed. The exhibition presents the history of the fortress and the archaeological finds that came to light in the area.
The fortress remains are part of the proposal for the World Heritage nomination of the Hungarian section of the Danube Limes. Visits are possible by prior booking or on open days announced by the operator.
