About the museum
The studium generale founded in Pécs on 1 September 1367 belongs to the series of university foundations in Central and Eastern Europe: it came into being at roughly the same time as the universities of Kraków (1364) and Vienna (1365), after the foundation of Prague (1348). Its foundation is linked to the name of Koppenbachi Vilmos, Bishop of Pécs, who was a diplomat, secret chancellor and royal chapel-count (kápolnaispán) of King I. Lajos.
The institution followed the model of the University of Padua, with the Bishop of Pécs at its head as chancellor. Its operation was short: after the founder’s death it began to decline and probably ceased in the 1390s.
Excavations begun in 1967 around the Cathedral uncovered a building between the castle wall and the cathedral, which in the 11th to 14th centuries was the palace of the bishops of Pécs. It was rebuilt in the second half of the 14th century; the discovery of the bishop’s coat of arms confirmed that the builder was Bishop Vilmos. The exhibition presents this site and the history of the university.
