About the museum
The late Roman, partly early Christian cemetery that stretches beneath Dóm tér (Cathedral Square) preserves the memory of the Roman Sopianae. The visitor centre brings the tomb structures together into a single complex, so that the archaeological remains on the square can be viewed under protected conditions.
The exhibition space contains six two-storey burial chambers (Nos. I, II, III, IV, XIX and XX) and two larger single-room buildings: the seven-apsed Cella Septichora and burial chamber No. V. The lower level of the two-storey structures was the crypt where the dead were placed; the upper level served as a memorial chapel. A special feature of the cemetery is that such stone-built burial structures have rarely survived in the northern and western Roman provinces, whereas in Pécs they have survived in large numbers.
Some of the wall paintings are decorated with biblical scenes and early Christian symbols, which give the World Heritage site its universal value. The Early Christian Mausoleum and the tomb structure at No. 8 Apáca utca form separate islands within the World Heritage area; a joint admission applies to them.
