Központi Bányászati Múzeum

One of Hungary’s largest technical museums, in the Baroque Esterházy Palace in Sopron: a thousand years of mining, a mineral collection and the Élménybánya (Experience Mine) for children.

About the museum

The Központi Bányászati Múzeum (Central Mining Museum) is one of Hungary’s largest technical museums, which preserves and presents the material relics, documents and photographs of Hungarian mining. Its central collection and largest exhibition are housed in the Baroque Esterházy Palace, one of the most beautiful buildings in the historic centre of Sopron.

The permanent exhibitions present minerals and rocks of value to mining, the applied art and fine art relics of mining, the thousand-year history of mining in Hungary, and in particular the history of mining higher education. On the 600-square-metre display, multilingual inscriptions help orientation, and visitors can also see working mining machine models and a fine mineral collection.

The most exciting part of the exhibition is an early 20th-century mine gallery into which visitors can actually crawl; in addition, an original-size reconstruction of a prehistoric flint mine, narrow galleries of medieval mines and elements of a hydraulic shield can be seen. The Élménybánya of the museum is for children: they can put on a mining helmet, slide down into the mine, travel through narrow, dark galleries, ride in a mine wagon, and try out a medieval water-lifting device.
