About the museum
The Zettl-Langer Gyűjtemény is the private collection of a Sopron citizen family, housed in their original family home. The Bavarian-born Zettl family settled in Kőszeg around the 1750s. Zettl József founded a plant in Sopron in 1844 producing spirits, liqueur, rum and wine vinegar. His son, Zettl Gusztáv, wanted to be a painter, but his father called him home to run the business, so he became a patron of the arts in the town; in 1893 he was a founding member and first president of the Soproni Képzőművészeti Kör (Sopron Fine Arts Circle).
His grandson, Dr. Langer Herbert (1907–2000), inventoried the heritage in 1952, and in 1955 opened the museum to the general public. Since then the family has been leading visitors around; since 1998 the collection has operated as a foundation, looked after by the great-grandchild and their family.
