About the museum
The building of the Kútmúzeum in Orosháza is a water tower built in the 1930s, which performed its original function until the 1970s. The idea for the museum came from Kiss-Horváth Sándor, then chairman of the Orosházi Helytörténeti Csoport (Orosháza Local History Group), and it was realised in 1983 with the professional support of the Honismereti Szakkör (Heritage Study Circle) and the Magyar Vízügyi Múzeum (Hungarian Water Management Museum).
At first, the tools used for drawing water were displayed in the fenced garden of the water tower. The collection later expanded under the maintenance of the Békés Megyei Vízművek (Békés County Waterworks), and in 2002 an exhibition room was set up on Tas utca on the history of the town’s water supply. Since 2010 the owner has been the town council and the operator the Nagy Gyula Területi Múzeum (Nagy Gyula Regional Museum); in 2018 the well garden and the old wells were also renovated.
The thematic museum, unique on a national scale, presents the water-drawing tools of the last hundred years, from the kanta to mechanical pumps, and in the well garden visitors can see old wells. The building was twice awarded the title Év Múzeuma (Museum of the Year) in the 2000s.
