About the museum

The first museum in Orosháza opened on 10 April 1927 as a school collection. Its founder was Balázs Juhász, the history teacher of the civic boys' school, who involved the pupils in collecting and registering the objects. After his death József Sitkei took over the care of the collection, but during the Second World War much of the material was destroyed or lost.

After the war the need for a town museum arose again. In early 1945 the merchant János Schwarcz offered his villa, designed by the master builder Pál Bokor, for museum purposes. The surviving part of the school collection moved into this building under the direction of József Sitkei and the teacher Nagy Gyula, and the museum opened its doors on 21 April 1946.

In 1950 it was nationalised and took the name Szántó Kovács János; its director until 1978 was the ethnographer Nagy Gyula, who also published yearbooks and a town monograph. From 1962 it belonged to the county museum network; since 2001 the municipality of Orosháza has maintained it, and it operates as a museum with a regional remit. It received its present name on 1 November 2015.

The collection includes archaeological, ethnographic, historical, fine art, applied art (glass) and literary material. The permanent exhibition covers the history of Orosháza from prehistory to the 21st century, with digital and interactive elements. Further exhibition venues belong to the institution: the Városi Képtár (Town Gallery), the Kútmúzeum (Well Museum) and the Darvas József Irodalmi Emlékház (Darvas József Literary Memorial House).
