About the museum
The Magyar Olimpiai és Sportmúzeum (Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum) is Hungary’s only sports museum with a nationwide collecting remit, but it has operated under this name only since 2013. The collection is significant even by European standards: it preserves more than 12,000 objects and 300,000 photographs, documents, films and posters, including Olympic relics, personal items of sports legends and memorabilia of major competitions.
In 2024 a comprehensive renewal began: the museum developed a new operating structure and strategy, and for the Paris Olympics it opened an interactive exhibition called Sportodüsszeia (Sport Odyssey) on Margitsziget. As a result, in 2025 the museum moved into the building called Holdudvar (Moon Courtyard) on Margitsziget.
The exhibition Margitsziget – Sportsziget! (Margitsziget – Sports Island!) in the Holdudvar presents the cultural and sports history of the island, from the founding of the first sports clubs, through the aristocratic sports between the two world wars and the socialist mass sports movements, up to the present day. The exhibition also works as a visible storage, offering a glimpse into the museum’s collection and into the work of restorers and curators. The museum also runs a Turistamúzeum (Tourism Museum) in the Báró Eötvös Loránd Menedékház (Baron Eötvös Loránd Mountain Hut) at Dobogókő.
