About the museum
The Bükki Csillagda is the astronomy and nature-education visitor centre of the Bükki Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság (Bükk National Park Directorate), within the boundaries of Répáshuta in the Bükk Mountains. Its surroundings have received the Silver rating of the International Dark-Sky Association, so in a place protected from light pollution many thousands of stars can be seen with the naked eye on moonless nights.
The building houses a planetarium with fifty seats, where the sky is shown in 4K quality and in 3D on a dome eight metres in diameter. The central theme of the exhibition is the relationship between the Sun and humans; with holographic displays, holographic pyramids and augmented reality (AR), it presents the life of the stars. The meteorite collection shows, for some meteorite types, the largest pieces exhibited in Hungary, including pieces of lunar and Martian origin; visitors can touch some of the stones and look at their structure under a microscope.
The 6.7-metre-diameter observation dome awaits visitors with a solar telescope and high-performance telescopes, and from the nearby mészégető bok (lime-kiln site) a nature trail begins, presenting the planets and the geological, cultural-historical and natural values of the area. The Saturday-evening astronomy programmes take place even in cloudy weather.
