About the museum
The Mosonvármegyei Múzeum (Moson County Museum) is another exhibition venue of the Hanság Museum in Mosonmagyaróvár; its centre is the Cselley House. The predecessor of the museum was founded in 1882 as the Mosonmegyei Történelmi és Régészeti Egylet (Moson County Historical and Archaeological Society); the idea is associated with the name of Ivánfi Ede, a Piarist teacher.
The permanent archaeological, local history and ethnographic exhibition presents the history of the Moson Plain: human civilisation appeared here eight to nine thousand years ago. One of the founders of the museum, Sőtér Ágost, had already carried out significant excavations at the end of the 19th century. Among the prehistoric relics, a clay horn that can still be sounded today stands out. The 1956 memorial exhibition commemorates the Mosonmagyaróvár volley of fire, one of the most tragic events of the revolution: on 26 October 1956, between 1,200 and 2,000 unarmed people came to the front of the border guard barracks.
