About the museum

The Danubiana project grew out of the friendship between the Slovak gallerist Vincent Polakovič and the Dutch collector Gerard Meulensteen. Construction of the museum began in 1999 on a peninsula at the Čunovo water dam, south of Bratislava, and it was officially opened on 9 September 2000.

The original building is shaped like a ship and was designed by the architect Peter Žalman. In 2011 Gerard Meulensteen donated his museum to Slovakia, and the government set up a non-profit organisation to manage it. The annex designed by the architect Ján Kukuľa, which was built along the bank of the Danube, was started in March 2013 and opened in September 2014; in the same year it received the Building of the Year award.

Today the museum presents a selected part of the Meulensteen collection, with around 200 paintings and sculptures, which are regularly rotated. The grounds include a sculpture park with around 60 works and a walkable roof with views of the Danube, Bratislava and the Little Carpathians.
