About the museum
The site stands on the location of the Roman military fort Gerulata, which in the 1st to 4th centuries was part of the Limes Romanus defensive system. The fort protected the eastern flank of the legions at Carnuntum and kept watch over the movement of Germanic peoples. Burial grounds and settlement from the Migration Period have also been found in the area. Since 2021 the site has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire.
In the outdoor area, the late-antique fort of the 4th century has been open to visitors since 1987, with conserved remains of the original architecture and older foundations of buildings from several construction phases. Inside the site, since 2022, there has been a permanent exhibition, Gerulata na hraniciach Rímskej ríše (Gerulata on the Frontiers of the Roman Empire), presenting the most interesting finds: weapons, pottery, jewellery, everyday objects, parts of horse harness, a helmet, gravestones, reliefs and coins. It also includes the virtual Gerulata, a 3D model of the Roman camp that can be explored in walk-through or game mode.
