About the museum
The Nagyatád Town Museum opened in April 1996, on the 25th anniversary of Nagyatád being granted town status. The building was constructed in the late 1920s on Széchenyi tér for the notary Mike Imre; after its nationalisation in 1948 it was used for military purposes, and after the local unit was disbanded the town bought it and converted it into a museum. The architect Szakonyi László based the renovation on the exterior of the original villa, and the building was repainted from military green to yellow.
The collection presents the town’s history in the 19th and 20th centuries: former local industries (a rope and cord factory, a yarn factory, a canning factory, mills, a printing house), trade, banks, bathing culture, the history of schools, as well as the tools of craft workshops and objects of traditional peasant farming, household and clothing. In 2014 it was enriched with a military collection donated by the heritage association of the 69th Tank Regiment. The permanent town-history exhibition, titled “Múltidéző” (Recalling the Past), is continuously renewed.
