About the museum
The Szennai Skanzen was the third of its kind in the country and opened in 1978 within the Zselic Landscape Protection Area, only 8 km from Kaposvár. Uniquely, it was created in the middle of a living village, with the active participation of the community, and its aim is to preserve and present the folk culture and the material and intangible heritage of the Zselic and Belső-Somogy. For the authentic relocation of the built heritage, the museum received the Europa Nostra Award in 1982. Since 2013 it has been a member institution of the Szabadtéri Néprajzi Múzeum (Open-Air Museum of Ethnography, the Skanzen in Szentendre).
The museum shows five residential houses with their farm buildings, three hillside wine cellars, two sacred roadside monuments and a machine shed housing agricultural machinery. The thatched, smoke-kitchen houses reflect the folk architecture of the second half of the 19th century and come from villages of Belső-Somogy and the Zselic, as well as from the Dráva valley. The first house came from Rinyakovácsi, the second from Kisbajom, and the third from Csököly, famous for its white mourning costume. The open-air museum welcomes visitors with a varied programme, festivals and museum education offerings.
