About the museum
Mills have operated in the valley of the Orfű stream since the Middle Ages. The present water mill building was built in the middle of the 19th century; at the beginning of the 20th century it came into the possession of the water miller Nicsinger Henrik, who modernised it with roller mills. After 1947 the family was deported because of its German origin; the mill later served as a warehouse, and its machines were carried away.
The mill was saved thanks to the staff of the Janus Pannonius Múzeum in Pécs: the water mill building was restored in 1970, when the museum was established. In 1974 the presentation was expanded by relocating the Mekényes dry mill. From the early 1990s the mill has been run by the Füzes family; since the summer of 1994, Orfű has been the only stream mill in the country producing under an operating licence.
A paper mill operating since 2016 can also be visited: in the southern part of the Carpathian Basin this type of mill has not survived, and the new paper mill is the site of the revival of an almost vanished craft. The interiors of the mills can be entered only on a guided tour.
