About the museum
The Nagyvázsony branch of the Postamúzeum is located in a listed peasant house of importance for the village scene, at the foot of Kinizsi Castle, and has presented the history of communications since 1968. The small-windowed rooms with beamed ceilings also house local postal history: from the late 18th century the settlement was a stop on the postal road linking Buda with Graz, where the postmasters kept horses for changing.
The exhibition introduces visitors to the operation of the horse-changing stations and to the delizsánsz (diligence) service that started in 1752 and opened the era of scheduled passenger, parcel and money transport. The stable of the Nagyvázsony horse-changing station, dating from the mid-19th century, still stands in the village. The display shows the development of the postal service from the second half of the 19th century, along with office equipment such as letter scales and weight sets.
The second main section covers the history of telecommunications from 1881 onwards, from the telegraph and the telephone exchanges to later devices. Visitors can try out some old telephones. The branch is one of the regional venues of the Budapest-based Postamúzeum.
