About the museum
József Rippl-Rónai (1861–1927), the first modern artist of Hungarian painting, returned to his home town of Kaposvár in 1902 to create an ideal home and studio for himself. After the success of an exhibition in 1906 he was able to buy a small estate. The building and park ensemble known as the “Róma-villa” was one of the most important workshops of Hungarian painting until the artist's death in 1927.
The rooms furnished with antique furniture, the park, and the family members, friends and favourite animals inspired the “maize-field pictures” (kukoricás képek), an individual variant of the Fauvist style. Every detail of the villa preserves its original state from Rippl-Rónai's time; the house, arranged as a museum, the studio, the furnishings, furniture and relics are complemented by paintings and documentary photographs. The site has gained international fame as the most important place of pilgrimage connected with Rippl-Rónai.
The exhibitions are shown in the Róma-villa, in the Andrássy-ebédlő (Andrássy Dining Room) and in the studio; the visitor centre and the park complete the visit.
