About the museum
The Szentjakabi Benedictine Abbey is one of the most beautiful and important historic monuments of Somogy, located where the Zselic meets the valley of the River Kapos. Founded in 1061, the abbey, once called Zselincszentjakab, was the first privately founded Benedictine monastery in Hungary. The walls, preserved in places to a height of several metres, are among the few surviving examples of 11th-century Hungarian architecture.
The brick church, almost 19 metres long, ended in a semicircular sanctuary; in its centre four pillars supported the dome, above which stood a tower, and there were galleries on both sides and in the west. Rebuilding in the Gothic style began at the end of the 14th century, when the nave received a ribbed cross vault. From the undisturbed deeper layers around 150 burials were excavated, mainly the graves of monks and abbots. Among the finds were unusual book fittings (könyvveretek), a fragment of a sundial and a fragment of a gold jewel.
The ruin garden is the most important and most spectacular medieval monument of Kaposvár; museum education sessions are held in the visitor building.
