About the museum
The predecessor of the Somogy museum organisation was founded in 1909 as the “Somogymegyei Muzeum Egyesület” (Somogy County Museum Association). The Minister of Religion and Public Education declared its collections a public collection in 1936; from 1949 it operated as the Somogy Megyei Múzeum (Somogy County Museum). The first permanent exhibition was opened in 1951 by Bernáth Aurél. The network grew large in the following decades and was then gradually slimmed down; today it operates as the Rippl-Rónai Vármegyei Hatókörű Városi Múzeum (county-scope urban museum), based on Rippl-Rónai tér.
The museum’s exhibitions remain in the old central building at 10 Fő utca, together with the archaeology and fine art departments and the book collection. The permanent exhibitions include “Újratöltve” (Reloaded), a six-unit ethnographic exhibition; “Kincsek Somogy földjéből” (Treasures from the Land of Somogy), an archaeological exhibition; “Fényes ezüstök és aranyak Somogyországból” (Shining Silver and Gold from Somogy), a numismatic display; exhibitions on the natural heritage, hunting treasures and fishing (“Karó közt a potyka”, Chub Among the Stakes); and the fine art exhibition “Rippl-Rónai öröksége” (The Legacy of Rippl-Rónai), which presents 20th-century Hungarian artistic heritage through nearly 500 works. The Somogyi Kincsestár (Somogy Treasure Store), an ethnographic display storeroom, preserves nearly three thousand wood-carved and textile objects.
