About the museum
The classicist building on Zárda utca in Kaposvár was built in 1833 to the plans of Török Ferenc. In 1860 it was bought by Vaszary Mihály, and in this house his son, the painter Vaszary János (1867–1939), was born.
By 2003 the building had been renovated with the support of the Kulturális Örökségvédelmi Hivatal (Cultural Heritage Protection Office) and with municipal help, and in the same year, on 23 May, it was inaugurated as the Vaszary Emlékház (Vaszary Memorial House). The L-shaped house consists of three street-facing rooms and a courtyard wing that opens from a vaulted porch.
Previously the building housed an exhibition presenting the painter’s oeuvre. Today it contains the collection of cast-iron objects of the former private collector Steiner József, under the title “Az otthon melege” (The Warmth of Home). The exhibition is currently temporarily closed.
