About the museum
The Római Kőtár is located between the centre of Szentendre and Route 11. From the second half of the 1st century, for 400 years, the Danube Bend played an important strategic role, as one of the most exposed sections of the limes, the border of Pannonia. The limes was protected by a dense chain of camps and watchtowers; on the site of today's Szentendre, at Ulcisia Castra, a considerable military force was stationed.
Craftsmen and merchants working for the military lived west and south of the camp, in the canabae area. The Roman-era population was buried along the Danube road leading to Aquincum, along the limes road; in the late Roman cemetery there also stood a small early Christian burial chapel. The stone collection preserves memories of these periods. The Római Kőtár is an exhibition site of the Ferenczy Múzeumi Centrum.
