Szarvasi Szárazmalom

Hungary's only working dry mill in its original location, in Szarvas, with demonstration milling.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,600

About the museum

The Szarvas dry mill, known as the mill named after Tomka Sándor, was built in 1836 by Czech master craftsmen on the order of the Bolza counts' family. Earlier, many dry mills and windmills operated in the Szarvas area; the earliest records date from 1722. Today the dry mill is the only dry mill in Hungary that has survived in its original location and is still working.

In the Middle Ages and later the mill was also a social meeting place; under the mill tent, voluntary and free teaching took place. Today, as a listed monument of industrial history, it is a mill museum with guided tours, and in summer demonstration milling recalls the old techniques of grain grinding.

The mill is run by the municipally owned Tessedik Sámuel Múzeum és Szárazmalom, which also offers museum education sessions for kindergarten and school groups.
