About the museum
The museum operates in the Baroque building of Tessedik Sámuel's former economic school, built in 1791, which was the country's first agricultural school. After the school closed, the building housed a grammar school (gimnázium) from 1834 to 1906, a teacher training college from 1907 to 1959, and in 1960 a student hostel of the kindergarten teacher training college; since 1973 it has been the museum's headquarters.
The museum was established in 1951 at the initiative of the Múzeumok és Műemlékek Országos Központja (National Centre for Museums and Monuments) in memory of Tessedik Sámuel; in 1952 the institution received an operating licence and the name Tessedik Sámuel Múzeum. The first permanent exhibition, the Tessedik Sámuel Emlékkiállítás (Tessedik Memorial Exhibition), opened in 1954. Its founding director, Palov József, led the museum from 1951 to 1994, and in 1976 he managed to obtain the present building for it.
The collection was based on archaeological finds taken over from local schools and on local history and ethnographic collections. In 1981 an exhibition of the ethnographic collection of veterinarian Dr. Domán Imre opened; of Domán's collection of 2,500 objects, nearly 700 were donated to the museum.
