About the museum
The Túri Fazekas Múzeum is Hungary’s largest public collection with museum status devoted specifically to folk pottery, with more than eight thousand ceramics. Since 2005 it has been located in the Bolváry manor house (Bolváry-kúria) in Mezőtúr, an L-shaped residential building in classicizing style built in 1821 by the landowner Kállay Péter.
The golden age of pottery in Mezőtúr can be dated to between 1870 and 1890, when the so-called dudi vessels, with a bread-roll-yellow base colour, were made in several dozen workshops in the town. The collection was significantly enriched by Dr. Füstös Jenő, who began collecting memorabilia of local pottery traditions in 1983, and in 2009 donated his collection of more than a thousand pieces to the museum. In July 2010 the legacy of Kun Zsigmond also moved to Mezőtúr, where the Kun Zsigmond Lakásmúzeum (Kun Zsigmond Flat Museum) can be seen.
The permanent exhibition presents the history of local pottery, from the archaeological periods to the works of 21st-century artists.
