About the museum
The Tiszazugi Földrajzi Múzeum was founded in 1956 by Dr. Varga Lajos, a geography and history teacher at the Hajnóczy József Gimnázium in Tiszaföldvár, as an institution unique in the region. The founder led it for nine years, and from 1963 he organised the Odorvár research camp together with a colleague; the camp still operates today. In 2006 the museum moved into the converted former primary school building at 101 Kossuth utca.
The interactive, family-friendly permanent exhibition “Tiszavilág – Táj és ember a Tiszazugban” (Tiszavilág – Landscape and People of the Tiszazug) opened in 2009 in two rooms, together with a hall for temporary exhibitions in the main building. The outdoor activity building, which also hosts events, was completed in 2010. The Kossuth House, a former steward’s house built at the end of the 18th century in the museum’s courtyard, was renovated in 2012 and can be visited as a study storeroom: almost a third of the storeroom material is shown here in a thematic arrangement, including the Ice Age animal bone collection of some three hundred pieces.
The study and museum adventure garden behind the Kossuth House developed between 2016 and 2024, with a trodden trail, a mammoth-bone search, a playground, a music area and a stone park unique on the Great Plain. Since September 2020 the museum has also run the nearby house at 95 Kossuth út as a village heritage house under the name Tiszazugi otthonok (Homes of the Tiszazug); this bourgeois home commemorates the history of the family, as well as the deportations of the 1950s and the emigration of 1956.
