About the museum
The first opportunity to establish a museum in Baja arose in 1914, when Déri Frigyes offered his cultural-history collection to the town. The plan was thwarted by the First World War and the Serbian occupation. The museum was finally founded between the two World Wars: the art collector Oltványi (Artinger) Imre had assembled the basis of the first contemporary picture gallery in Hungary by 1936, and in October 1936 the county council decided to found the museum alongside the picture gallery.
The second core of the gallery was a gift of 49 works from the widow of the painter Nagy István. In Baja, therefore, a contemporary fine-art collection gave life to the museum.
The Türr István Museum is the landscape museum of Northern Bačka, the northern part of the former county of Bács-Bodrog. It keeps archaeological, historical, ethnographic and fine-art collections; its permanent exhibitions include Life on the Danube, Ethnographic Groups around Baja and The Capital of Kincses Bácska. Further exhibition venues belong to the museum: the Nagy István Gallery, the Éber Memorial House, the Bagoly Castle and the Bunyevác Heritage House (Bunyevac Heritage House).
