About the museum
Varga Mátyás (1910–2002) was an outstanding stage designer of Hungarian theatre art: he designed for the stages of the national theatres of Budapest, Szeged and Kolozsvár alike, as well as for films and open-air performances. From 1936 he also designed the sets of the Szegedi Szabadtéri Játékok (Szeged Open-Air Festival), and for a long time he remained a defining figure in the artistic direction of the festival. Around the age of sixty he also began to make ceramics. He was a Kossuth Prize laureate and an honorary citizen of Szeged.
The Varga Mátyás Színháztörténeti Kiállítóház (Varga Mátyás Theatre History Exhibition House) opened on 1 August 1987. The collection created by the artist and donated to the city of Szeged gives a comprehensive picture of his life’s work and of 20th-century Hungarian theatre history. The collection can be used for research with a research permit.
