About the museum

The Szeged Cathedral, the Fogadalmi templom (Votive Church), was built as the fulfilment of a vow made after the great Szeged flood of 1879: the town’s leaders promised to erect a huge church in honour of the Virgin Mary. Construction began in 1913 to designs by Foerk Ernő, was interrupted by the world war, and the solemn consecration took place on 24 October 1930. The cathedral is the only church in Hungary built as a cathedral in the 20th century.

The visitor centre, next to Dóm tér, presents the construction history of the cathedral and the square, and also houses the treasury of the Szeged-Csanád Diocese. Among other things, it displays the 15th-century Szent Gellért chasuble, as well as Gothic, Baroque and neoclassical chalices, reliquaries, crucifixes and censers. The collection also preserves Baroque wooden statues from the old Szent Demeter church.

Visitors can climb to the viewing platform of the western tower, 46 metres up, and with a guide to the dome viewpoint, as well as, on a guided tour, to the Dömötör Tower, Szeged’s oldest building, built on 12th–13th-century foundations. The entrance to the urn cemetery beneath the church is also here.
