About the museum
The predecessor of the Móra Ferenc Múzeum (Ferenc Móra Museum) was established in 1883 as part of the Szeged city library, through the systematic collecting work of its director, Reizner János. The present neoclassical building, the Kultúrpalota, was inaugurated on 6 September 1896 within the framework of the millennium celebrations, under the name Somogyi Könyvtár és Városi Múzeum (Somogyi Library and City Museum).
The first permanent exhibition opened in 1899, with material from the picture gallery, coins and archaeology. Under the directorship of Tömörkény István the ethnographic collection took shape; the writer Móra Ferenc joined the house as a natural history curator, and from 1917 until his death he led the museum as its director. The library and the museum separated in 1950; from then on the institution bore the name of Móra Ferenc.
Today the museum is a leading cultural centre of the region, conducting archaeological, ethnographic, historical, numismatic and natural science research. Alongside its permanent exhibitions it regularly organises spectacular temporary shows, and it includes the Fekete ház (Black House), the Vármúzeum és Kőtár (Castle Museum and Stone Collection), the Kass Galéria (Kass Gallery) and the Varga Mátyás Színháztörténeti Kiállítóház (Varga Mátyás Theatre History Exhibition House). Two lookouts on the roof of the building open onto the city centre.
