About the museum
The BKV and its predecessors have long considered restoring and preserving one type of each retired vehicle for future generations. This became possible when a collection presenting the history of public transport in the capital and in Hungary could be set up in the former BHÉV depot in Szentendre.
The industrial-history collection known as the Városi Tömegközlekedési Múzeum (Urban Public Transport Museum) opened to the public on 14 July 1992, in the depot building dating from 1914, when the HÉV line was electrified. The building has been renovated and converted; today it welcomes visitors with five exhibition halls, a presentation hall and an outdoor exhibition area.
The exhibition traces the development of the capital’s transport from the opening of the first horse-tram line in 1866 to the metro lines built and planned. It presents the history of trams, HÉV vehicles, buses and trolleybuses, as well as the infrastructure serving the railways. The collection includes some 60 restored vehicles, among them the Haraszti steam locomotive put into service in 1887, tram No. 418 built in 1897, Ikarus buses, trolleybuses and car 400 of the Ganz–Hunslet metro train.
