About the museum
The church of Zsámbék was built in the first half of the 13th century, in the late Romanesque and early Gothic style, showing French influences. The three-aisled basilica raised in the 1220s was managed by the Premonstratensians, and from the time of King Mátyás by the Pauline Order. III. Béla donated Zsámbék to the knight Aynard, and his successors built the church; IV. Béla confirmed the deed of donation in 1258. The monastery of the Premonstratensian Order stood beside the church.
The fate of the building was sealed by the earthquake of 28 June 1763: the vault and side wall of the northern side aisle collapsed, the ruin became ownerless, and its stones were carried away. In the 1870s Rómer Flóris and Henszlmann Imre drew attention to the need to save it; in 1889 Trefort Ágoston, the minister, commissioned the architect-engineer Möller István with its preservation. The work won worldwide recognition; based on Möller's plans, the Lehel tér church in Budapest was built in the early 1930s on the model of the Zsámbék ruined church.
Alongside the church ruin, visitors can also see the stone collection set up in the ruins of the former monastery.
