Zsámbéki Tájház

One of the oldest houses in Zsámbék, built around 1740, with a Swabian folk art and local history exhibition, painted furniture and a kitchen with an open chimney hood.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 400

About the museum

The house is among the oldest residential buildings in Zsámbék; it takes its name from the relief of St Wendelin, the patron saint of shepherds, on its façade. In the 1740s it was built by Melchior Keller, a wealthy Swabian stock-breeder who arrived with the first wave of settlement.

The exhibition was created on the initiative of civilians. In the rooms, hand-painted furniture and furniture made with special techniques evoke Swabian folk art and old Zsámbék life. The kitchen with the open chimney hood displays the oldest piece of furniture in Zsámbék, a kitchen cupboard decorated with casein paint made from a mixture of curd and lime. The most significant piece is the cupboard bearing the date 1874, whose painting preserves the traditions of the Germans who came from the Black Forest region.

The parts of the local history exhibition are the “tisztaszoba” (parlour), the kitchen with the open chimney hood, and the thematic exhibition “Szekrénymesék” (“Cupboard Tales”), opened on 11 October 2020.
