About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Eroli, in the heart of ancient Narni, in the terziere (district) of Fraporta. The building was erected in the 17th century by the noble Narnese family of the Eroli, who had already given the town the cardinal Berardo Eroli, patron of important works of art in the second half of the 15th century.

The exhibition route unfolds over two floors. On the first floor are arranged finds from the territory, from protohistory, including tools and fossils such as the tusks of Elephas antiquus found in the surrounding area at the start of the 20th century, through the Roman age of ancient Narnia to the Middle Ages. One section is dedicated to Erasmo da Narni, known as Gattamelata, and another houses an Egyptian mummy with its sarcophagus, which came to Narni with the donation of a Roman collector in the 1930s.

On the second floor is the picture gallery, with paintings from the 14th to the 18th century. Outstanding are the Annunciation by Benozzo Gozzoli, from the church of San Domenico, and the altarpiece of the Coronation of the Virgin by Domenico Ghirlandaio, both commissioned by the cardinal Berardo Eroli. The route is accompanied by projections, multimedia reproductions and music.
