About the museum
The Museo Internazionale del Presepe was created by restoring the ancient church of Santa Maria, dating from the 13th century, and an adjacent historic building, which had been abandoned. It is in Greccio, the village in the Rieti area linked to the Nativity re-enactment staged by Saint Francis, about 200 metres from the historic centre.
The collection was begun in 2015 and brings together hundreds of nativity scenes from many cultures, made of wood, terracotta, ceramic, paper and recycled materials. Alongside ethnographic and traditional nativity scenes are contemporary creations by Italian and foreign artists, papier-mâché artisans, master ceramicists and craft enthusiasts.
The museum is run by the Municipality of Greccio. At the end of 2025 it reopened with a new route dedicated to the theme of peace and the Nativity.
