About the museum
The Museo civico archeologico e Pinacoteca “Edilberto Rosa” is in Piazza Augusto Vera, in the historic centre of Amelia, and tells the story of the town from its pre-Roman origins to its Christianisation. The display occupies three floors.
The oldest finds are on the ground floor; the first floor holds material from the Roman period, from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD, including the bronze statue of Germanicus, over two metres tall and found in 1963. The second floor is devoted to early medieval archaeology and to the picture gallery, with works from the 15th to the 18th century, including a panel of Saint Anthony Abbot by Piermatteo d'Amelia.
Among the finds are the grave goods of a 4th-century BC necropolis discovered in 2001 near Via I Maggio, with mirrors, toilet implements, jewellery and vessels for lamps, indicating high-ranking burials, together with the skeleton of a dog found near a child's tomb.
