About the museum
The museum was founded in 2004 and is named after the archaeologist Claudia Giontella, who played a decisive role in setting it up. It is located in the industrial area of the former SIRI (Società Italiana Ricerche Industriali), recovered and transformed into the CAOS – Centro Arti Opificio Siri, which also houses the museum of modern and contemporary art Aurelio De Felice, a theatre and exhibition rooms.
The route is divided into two sections. The protohistoric section displays finds mainly from the necropolises of the Acciaierie (10th–8th century BC), the former Poligrafico Alterocca (8th–7th century BC) and San Pietro in Campo (7th–6th century BC), which document the Proto-Umbrian people of the Naharti, attested along the river Nera. The double burial in the Acciaierie necropolis is identified by popular tradition with Sabino and Serapia, the lovers of St Valentine.
The Roman section tells, through inscriptions and representations from the late Republican to the imperial age, the arrival of Rome in Umbria and the social makeup of Interamna Nahars. It includes finds from the excavation of the former Palazzo Sanità, a collection of sculptures including the relief of Mithras tauroctonus, the diademed head from the sanctuary of Monte Torre Maggiore, sarcophagi and Julio-Claudian statues from Carsulae; at the entrance stands the marble telamon found in Terni in 1971.
