About the museum
The Museo del Borgo was opened in 1994 by Francesco Scerbo, a retired teacher, artist and sculptor born in Amato. For years Scerbo collected tools, objects, documents and photographs in the village and surroundings, restored them and arranged them in premises he owns in the centre of the village, on the ground floor of a former bakery. The museum is non-profit and aims to preserve the memory of the trades of the past.
The entrance has olive and grape presses, a grain mill, ploughs and farm tools. The following rooms hold sewing machines, antique keys, clocks, padlocks, irons, kitchen utensils and even a jukebox, as well as documents and books, some of them rare, and photographs from the 19th century to the early 1990s. The last room is dedicated to the tools of craft trades, such as saws, planes, spirit levels, a lathe and blacksmith’s tongs.
An art section, titled “Quasi come natura creò”, brings together sculptures in wood carved from twisted timber. The collection is described as constantly evolving.
