About the museum
The museum opened in April 2007 on the initiative of the Provincia di Catanzaro. It is dedicated to the Brigata Catanzaro and to military history from the Napoleonic era to the Second World War, and is housed in the city's Parco della Biodiversità Mediterranea.
The route runs over two floors. The ground floor covers the Bourbon, Napoleonic and Garibaldian periods, with the names of the southern Italian and Calabrian volunteers of the Expedition of the Thousand. The first floor is devoted to the wars of the 20th century and includes a reconstructed trench with footage from the Istituto Luce and battle sounds.
The collections include firearms and edged weapons, among them Vetterli rifles from 1870 and pieces from the Reali Ferriere di Mongiana, uniforms of various corps, propaganda posters, period magazines, letters and personal documents, as well as 1:32-scale dioramas of battles such as Waterloo and Maida. The building also has a lecture hall.
