About the museum
The Antiquarium gathers the “stones” of Guardiagrele’s historic architecture: sculptural and architectural elements from the churches and buildings of the town, displayed in the ground-floor rooms of a medieval building in Piazza San Francesco, near the Museo del Costume. It is dedicated to Antonio Cadei.
The first room houses the reception area and two large stone lion supports (leoni stilofori), together with a capital found in 2013 during work in the Orto Santoleri, where the cloister of the monastery of San Pietro confessore once stood; it was built from 1313 onwards. The second room documents the architectural and urban development of the town from the Norman-Swabian period to the Angevin and Aragonese periods.
Among the oldest pieces, dating from the early 13th century, are a portal fragment and architraves with lions and scrolling foliage (girali). From the late 13th or early 14th century come a candelabrum for the Easter candle and a baptismal font with the symbols of the Evangelists, from Santa Maria Maggiore. The collection also includes corbels with expressive faces, the Compianto group depicting the dead Christ, a statue of Saint Michael the Archangel and the stone coat of arms of the Universitas (the medieval town council).
