About the museum
Rapino holds a prominent place among the historic ceramic centres of Abruzzo. Between the 19th and 20th centuries it was an important centre of popular ceramics, valued for the brilliance of its glazes, the vividness of its colours and the beauty of its decoration. The first documented potter, Raffaele Bozzelli, is recorded in 1821. Others who worked there included Fedele Cappelletti, regarded as one of the greatest majolica painters of southern Italy, the Cascella family and the Bozzelli and Bontempo families.
The museum, founded in 2003, is housed in the former monastery of Sant’Antonio and, alongside works by the most important potters of Rapino, also displays ceramics from international origins. In the same complex, thanks to European funding under Interreg III B CADSES, the Scuola della Ceramica (ceramics school) was established, with courses in decoration and turning also open to tourists.
Local production includes jugs, pitchers, tureens and plates decorated with flowers, birds on sprigs, the tablecloth pattern and the rooster; some of the jugs were used by pilgrims to the nearby sanctuary of San Rocco at Roccamontepiano to draw water from the miraculous spring.
